Volkswagen Golf

One of the staples of the Hatchback segment is the Volkswagen Golf. In the previous model year released a brand new version of the Golf with four versions: GTI GLS and GTI GLX. Sales for the Golf, especially the Golf GL, were brisk during 2000 and 2001. The improved vehicle quality and the classic styling were responsible for the sales boost.

Volkswagen Golf Engine Specs

Volkswagen Golf Engine Specs: The Golf GL comes outfitted with a 1.9 liter, 4-cylinder motor that uses 8 valves. The engine, manufactured by Volkswagen, is teamed up with a Volkswagen 4-speed transaxle. This arrangement has demonstrated to be an effective style for Volkswagen.

The Golf uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The car uses coil and coil springs front and rear respectively.

Vehicle Statistics

The Golf is 163.30 inches long, 68.30 inches wide, and 56.70 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 98.90 inches. It is able to seat 5 comfortably.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $16,350 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of $15,244. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 2-door Hatchback.

Fuel Efficiency

For the 2000 Golf, the fuel delivery system is a mechanical Bosch IFI, using DIESEL for fuel. A fuel-injected MFI configuration. The gas tank holds 14.50 gallons.

The 2000 Golf gets 28 - 31 miles/gallon on the highway and only 22 - 24 in the city. This is exceptional for a hatchback car.

We Think…

There are several reasons why the Volkswagen Golf GL sold well in 2000. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a Volkswagen, specifically a Golf.
