Pontiac Solstice

A high point in the convertible market is the Pontiac Solstice. In 2007 Pontiac released an upgraded version of the Solstice with two versions: Base and GXP. Sales for the Solstice, especially the Solstice Base, were brisk during 2007 and 2008. The improved reliability and the sporty styling were responsible for the sales boost.

Under the Hood

Standard equipment in the Solstice for 2006 and 2007 includes the 2.4 liter engine by General Motors, weighing in at 4 cylinders and sixteen valves. A 5-speed Standard Transmission puts the power of the Ecotec engine to the pavement. This is a long-standing favorite for buyers in the Convertible arena.

The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The Solstice uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. Load balancing is provided by coil front springs and coil in the rear.

Vehicle Statistics

The dimensions of the Solstice Base are 71.30 inches wide by 157.20 inches long. It sits 50.10 inches off the ground. It seats a standard two passengers, with 2 doors. The wheelbase of 95.10 allows for extra leg room for the rear passengers.

The listed retail price in 2007 (MSRP) was $21,515, with a dealer invoice cost of $20,332. This price is on target the industry average price for a two-door Convertible.

Fuel Efficiency

The fuel system for the 2007 Solstice is a SFI system, running on gasoline . The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The 13.00-gallon tank provides the fuel storage for longer trips.

The 2007 Solstice gets 26 - 28 miles/gallon on the highway and only 20 - 22 in the city. This is subpar for a convertible car.

What We Think of the Pontiac Solstice

The 2006 model began the promise of the Pontiac Solstice. The 2007 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers Pontiac hopes that the Solstice Base will continue to be a profitable vehicle.
