There’s been a lot of talk about the Pontiac GTO for 2004. As a leading car in the coupe market the GTO (and in this case specically the Base version) has maintained a good reputation. The 2-door GTO is especially appealing to broad audience, making it a perfect car to help Pontiac as a brand in general.
Under the Hood
Standard equipment in the GTO for 2003 and 2004 includes the 5.7 liter engine by General Motors, weighing in at 8 cylinders and sixteen valves. A 4-speed Automatic Transmission puts the power of the Chevrolet engine to the pavement. This is a long-standing favorite for buyers in the Coupe arena.
Steering control is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The GTO comes equipped with power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. The car uses coil front springs and coil in the rear.
Vehicle Statistics
The dimensions of the GTO Base are 72.50 inches wide by 189.80 inches long. It sits 54.90 inches off the ground. It seats a standard four passengers, with 2 doors. The wheelbase of 109.80 allows for extra leg room for the rear passengers.
The listed retail price in 2004 (MSRP) was $31,795, with a dealer invoice cost of $29,410. This price is on target the industry average price for a two-door Coupe.
Fuel Efficiency
The fuel system for the 2004 GTO is a SFI system, running on gasoline . The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The 18.00-gallon tank provides the fuel storage for longer trips.
The GTO Base received a miles-per-gallon rating of 16 - 17 in-city driving and 21 - 29 when it came to highway driving. Being a gas-powered non-hybrid car, this was exceptional.
What We Think of the Pontiac GTO
The 2003 model began the promise of the Pontiac GTO. The 2004 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers Pontiac hopes that the GTO Base will continue to be a profitable vehicle.

I’m in the market for a coupe next year when my lease is up. Should I buy one of these Pontiacs or hold out for next year’s GTO?
Cool car, I like it.
